I do it from scratch lately.
You just have to know EVERYTHING about GIMP before you can fool around with it. Tutorials will teach you about GIMP, therefore you can fool around.

If you want meaning, just put some text in your siggy. Don't clobber your image with text

Its good to have atleast one or two lines.

Not 400.
But read up on tuts.
Im lateley doing good.
Learn from other people and pick your style
If your a render user then you like to use images
If you like to make stuff from scratch then you have a lot of time on your hands
If you luuuurv effects then you like to make your art pop.

Try to get a mix of everything.
Use a couple of renders, add effects, text, all kinds of things to make it sexy. Thats what ive been doing xD

There really is no difference.
Look at my siggy, yeah it looks simple because it is.
Does it look cool? Yes.
Do I like it? yes.

You just want to make sure you like your picture, and you put effort into it.
