What exactly does that do???

In GIMP, the best way to use a fractal or c4d is to set the layer mode the fractal/c4d is on to "screen", to get rid of the black.

It also makes it look more natural, and takes away that "slapped-on" effect sometimes

You should get rid of the black box with the text. I like the glowing effect. Text score (1-5): 3.

Background is alright...but horrible quality= horrible appearance. I save everything as .pngs. Better quality means better picture. I know it seems little but it really makes a difference. Background score: 4

Tips

I know you said you dont like layers but they really are helpful! Learn to use them and that should help..
Try using the sharpen tool on some edges to make it look neat.
Try using some of the filters a lot. Sometimes if you experiment you will make something good happen. Of course you should know what your doing..
