updated dead rising walkthrough xbox 360

Welcome to Willamette Parkview Mall, also known as Hell.

Dead Rising certainly has its share of headaches and heartaches. Hell, once you see the enemies, they'll send you into cardiac arrest -- a cult of crazy commandos, a raucous, demonic clown, a surly grocery manager...and that's just the beginning. Dead Rising features a series of twists and turns that will have you fighting for your very life at every corner. Everywhere you turn death rears its ugly head, stalking, hunting, and preying on your every move. Why is it so hard to stay alive in this game?! Don't worry. 1UP is here to help.

Behold 1UP's frightfully huge Dead Rising Walkthrough. Not only will we show how to get through the mall (and live to tell about it), but also we'll tell you how to become a savvy mall shopper, er, survivor. With so much to learn, we'll begin at the first floor directory of the walkthrough, where we'll point out the necessities (optimizing your health and saving your game, for example). Feel free to venture to the second and third floor directories, where we document how to score huge zombie head counts.

In the walkthrough, we break down Dead Rising's elaborate story, case by case, providing you with boss strategies, shortcuts, and other helpful hints. And if you're still stumped by the zombies, our 10 videos will show you how to beat them -- and with audio commentary! We also showcase some of the more peculiar side missions featured in Dead Rising. Last but not least we look at the aftermath of 72 hours in Willamette Parkview Mall, and the outcome of the survivors.

First, understand this crucial fact: You are racing against the clock throughout the entire game. Each hour in zombie-infested Willamette takes roughly five minutes in real life, which means that certain actions, like boss battles and rescuing people, present themselves for only a predetermined length of time. And while rescuing people isn't exactly vital to advancement, the cases that break down on a day-to-day basis must be performed within their given timeslots, otherwise you are forced to reload your game, or worse, to start over. So keep an eye on your watch!

If there isn't any time to complete a case, you have two options after you die: 1) load game or 2) save status and quit. If you opt to save status and quit, you can begin a new game with whatever attributes you had when you quit. For example, if you got far enough in the game to level up a few times and accumulate a few more health bars, then you can begin a new game and start out at that level with those extra life bars.

    Saving Your Game

Unfortunately for you, Dead Rising does not have multiple save slots, thus making the game insanely difficult. There is a small trick, however, to circumvent this problem: You can save on multiple memory cards, or alternate between saves on the hard drive and on a memory card to allow for two separate saves. Also, separate your saves from one another with enough time in between them; if you fail a case due to time restraints, you can backtrack a few steps and allocate your time better.

By pressing start to retrieve your map (early in the game Otis the janitor will give you a map), you will see the letter "S" scattered throughout Willamette Mall. Most of the save locations can be found in public restrooms -- simply walk into either the male or female bathrooms, stand in front of a stall, and save your game. Other save locations include the green couch in the security room where you first meet the Department of Homeland Security (or DHS).

One final note about saving your progress: The game will automatically prompt you to save when beginning a new case. This is important since cases are timed, because it gives you an opportunity to maximize your time. If the case isn't going well or you're lost, simply load a save file and start the case with a fresh clock.

    Health

Forget the Band-Aids and Neosporin -- to stay alive in this zombie-infested nightmare Frank needs to consume some serious chow. What you eat is entirely up to you -- there are some great places to snack while in the mall. Milk, juice, and even wine are some of the better choices out there, whereas foods like bread, cabbage, and yogurt fill up only a small percentage of your health. Little items, like bags of chips or apples, can be found throughout the mall (keep a watchful eye for them, though), but the best tactic is to carry bigger food items in your inventory, especially while on a case.

Of course, there's the food court in the southern end of the mall and the grocery store in the north. But the best place to stock up on some excellent health items is on the second floor of Paradise Plaza, where you'll find a charming little place called Colombian Roastmasters.

At Colombian Roastmasters, you can blend your very own smoothies. Using different ingredients will produce distinctive and helpful results. Each smoothie you concoct consists of two separate items, and once you make a smoothie and drink, the status indicator will appear on the bottom right corner of the screen. To kick-start your smoothie habit, here are some helpful smoothie combinations.

OJ and OJ: Produces "nectar," which will attract the Queen Bees when drunk, but only for a limited time.

OJ and Coffee Creamer or Wine: Produces "quickstep," a short burst of speed that is very comical, but will only last for a short time.

OJ and Pie: Produces "untouchable" status, which protects you from zombies for a short period of time. You aren't invincible, but the zombies will refrain from lunging at you.

Coffee Creamer and Pie: Produces "zombait," which when used will attract the zombies. This is particularly helpful when rescuing people since you can lure the zombies towards you, thus creating a pathway for those needing assistance.

Condiment and Condiment: Produces "spitfire." Condiments like bottles of hot sauce can be found in the taco restaurant in the food court. Once you have activated spitfire, you can spit and kill zombies from a distance. To spit, hold down the R trigger and press the X button when you have no weapons in your hand.

Frank West: Reporter extraordinaire and all-around nice guy. Big, clunky, and runs as if he has two broken ankles, Frank is in search for the perfect story in hopes that it will land him on the cover of every magazine.

Ed DeLuca: Helicopter pilot with some mad flying skills. He drops you off on the rooftop of the mall in the beginning of the game after giving you the rundown of the town, all while evading the federal army.

Dr. Barnaby: Tough old geezer with a heart of gold. Supposedly, Dr. Barnaby and his researchers are responsible for the outpouring of the living dead, but he insists that he did "nothing wrong."

Jessica "Jessie" McCarney: She's a DHS agent with a great set of eyes, not to mention some serious junk in the trunk. Jessie isn't exactly helpful, but she's just here for the plot -- and to keep the boys happy.

Brad Garrison: Another DHS agent, Brad is one tough dude. He may be the long lost brother of Barry Bonds, but that hasn't been confirmed. Brad is after Carlito, the game's primary antagonist.

Carlito Keyes: Carlito is out for some blood. When he's not trying to put a bullet in your skull, Carlito hides out somewhere in the mall. Later you'll find out he has an exotic hot sister. Awesome.

Isabella Keyes: You love her when she looks at you with those crazy green eyes, but then you hate her when she's trying to place a Harley Davidson on your face. Isabella is the sister of Carlito, and her sappy story, as you will find out, will have you reaching for the tissue box.

Otis Washington: Otis is your informant. By watching the security monitors, Otis will periodically inform you about people who need to be rescued in the mall. You can gain some big PP doing this.

Kent: More annoying than anything, this Conan O'Brien wannabe has no interest in being rescued and would rather take photographs in the mall. The only good thing that comes out of him is camera advice.

    ...continued, (page 5 of 10)
    Easy Way Back to Headquarters

After the first case is complete and the second case has been initiated, the elevator from the rooftop becomes slightly irritating to board, due to the presence of the zombies who now reside in it. The best way to enter the zombie-infested elevator is to use the tank of propane (on the other side of the elevator). Position the propane tank in front of the elevator, hit the button to open the doors, and then shoot it from a distance for a fiery explosion, flooring all the zombies; however, you must have a gun in order to initiate the explosion.

Alternatively, you can enter the mall without ever hassling with the elevator. When you exit the airshaft and enter the rooftop from headquarters, run to the left, opposite of the elevator. At the end of the rooftop you will see a door on your right that leads to the top level of the storage room, where you can utilize the storage crates to jump down.

    Cases

Cases, levels that progress the story, consist of eight different case sections, all of which must be played in order and at the proper time. Not all sections within each case are playable. Some are strictly story-driven. For example, the first case alone has four separate sections, but only two of them are playable. We showcased the playable portions (labeled "parts") of the cases only.

Case 1 Part 2: Backup for Brad

Before you proceed out into the mall, you will witness a cut-scene involving Jessie, who tells you that Brad is tailing somebody in the mall but requires some much-needed backup. Unfortunately, Jessie sprains her ankle, thus putting the responsibility onto your shoulders. When you begin the case, you will be armed with a handgun. Refrain from using the gun's ammo, as it will be helpful to have more ammo in the upcoming boss battle.

Proceed to the food court by exiting Paradise Plaza's glass doors and crossing over Leisure Park. Before you even attempt to enter the food court, use the lawn mower to your right to plow down the zombies, creating a clear path to the door.

After the cut-scene, find the bar, which should be right behind you or to the right of the glass doors behind the food court. Here, grab a few bottles of wine -- a great way to increase your health. Fighting Carlito will be difficult. On a higher elevation than you, Carlito has the advantage, so the best attack plan is to come from the middle of the food court. Find a set of boxes and climb on top of them to access the platform where Carlito is.

Don't expect to attack Carlito out in the open. Use the corners of the walls for protection and only attack when Carlito is reloading his gun. After he takes enough damage (about half his health), he will position himself above the food court restaurants. At this point, if you're low on ammo, find Brad and he'll give you another gun.

You can either choose to fight Carlito alongside Brad on the ground floor and shoot up at Carlito during the second part of the battle, or you can engage him at close range in hand-to-hand combat. There is a handy knife on the floor of Jade Paradise, a restaurant in the food court. You can use this weapon to attack Carlito at close range, which is very effective. Utilize the restaurant's signs for coverage as you move closer to Carlito. Thus equipped with the knife, hack at Carlito when he is reloading his gun, or, if you have enough health, just run at him and finish him off.

After the battle with Carlito, follow Brad and proceed toward the Al Fresca Plaza. Be sure to stop by McHandy's Hardware on your left to pick up some useful weapons, including hedge clippers, chain saws, and sledgehammers. You can also save your progress in the gym's bathroom over on your right. Follow Brad into the Entrance Plaza to continue the first case.

    Case 1 Part 4: A Temporary Agreement

The final chapter of the first case is pretty easy. Proceed back to headquarters, which is in the security room. You may encounter a small snag in the road, however. If the time reaches 7:00 p.m., a cut-scene will appear, showing some crazy guys driving around in a Hummer. Taking on the crazy dudes is extremely frustrating. Luckily, you can bypass the three lunatics in the vehicle and deal with them later in the game. In other words, defeating the three guys in the Hummer isn't crucial to the story, but it's an annoyance you may encounter when crossing the park.

Remember to have some health items in your inventory before running across the park, so you can avoid potential harm from stray bullets.

Here, you'll find a great place to increase your PP. After the cut-scene, find a girl named Sophie Richards, who's running around the park. Talk to her and get her to join you, then follow your guide arrow to the other end of the park and enter the mall at Paradise Plaza. Avoid the Hummer by sticking to the shadows of the trees and utilizing the environment around you, since the Hummer can't follow you when you're surrounded by obstacles.

Once inside Paradise Plaza, proceed south and enter the security door on your left, and make sure Sophie follows you (if you decide to rescue her). After entering the security door, you will be in the storage facility where you will witness a cut-scene of a Queen Bee. Maneuver through the storage facility and then go up the service elevator to the rooftop. Now proceed through the air shaft and back down to the headquarters. You'll increase your PP for rescuing Sophie. Wait for daybreak to begin the next case.

You might have a lot of free time after completing the first case, so this might be a good point to save and to rescue people. The second case begins at 6:00 a.m. the next day, so just be sure to be back at the headquarters by then.

Carlito has taken Dr. Barnaby hostage and Brad is on the case. As you approach the Entrance Plaza, a cut-scene will illustrate that Dr. Barnaby is being strung from the ceiling with a rope -- very clichéd -- and Carlito has a sniper rifle on the roof. Brad is once again on the scene, and, by working together, you and Brad must do what you can to take out Carlito. Brad will run up the escalator to get to Carlito. A good strategy here is to not follow Brad -- run towards the end of the hall (south) so that you and Brad can tackle Carlito from separate sides, thus positioning him between the two of you.

There is a sports store just before the end of the hall where you will be able to find a mountain bike, which can be used to ride up the stairs and reach Carlito quickly.

After reaching the top floor, make sure you're armed with a highly damaging weapon such as the katana. You can use the individual pillars, which support the ceiling, to advance on Carlito and avoid his gunfire. Once in range to attack, strike him quickly, because if you stand around too long after attacking Carlito, he will counterattack with the blunt end of his sniper rifle. Brad is a big key to winning this mission; when he attacks Carlito, it will provide you with an open opportunity to strike, because Carlito's back will be turned. Alternatively, if Brad is dishing out a lot of damage to Carlito, you can let him do most of the work. After taking care of Carlito, he'll run toward the far balcony to get away, but not without leaving a parting gift: Before Carlito jumps over the rail, he'll get off a cheap shot at Brad's leg.

Case 2 Part 3: Medicine Run

Brad's leg wound, as a result of Carlitos' gunshot, requires medical attention. Find the grocery store to retrieve the proper medication. A difficult part of this mission requires you to cross the mall, fight an irate boss, get the medicine from the pharmacy, and return to headquarters -- all in a small window of time. Run quickly to the grocery store and do not dawdle -- killing zombies will only slow you down.

Hint: Equip a quickstep smoothie (see the Health section) in your inventory to help expedite the run back to headquarters. If you have the time -- and the ingredients -- mix a smoothie over at Colombian Roastmasters, then obtain the katana before proceeding on the case.

Once you enter the North Plaza, hide behind the construction scaffolding to avoid the zombies and head toward the grocery store as quickly as possible. Dispersed throughout the scaffolding are some cardboard boxes, which you should check out -- they contain some helpful hidden items.

The fight with Steve, the enraged grocery manager, can be difficult. Fortunately for you, your surroundings offer plenty of food and protection. First, you're in a grocery store, so food (health) is readily accessible. Second, you can climb on top of the food shelves that make up the aisles to get away from Steve. When Steve doesn't give you the common courtesy of allowing you to eat in peace, you can hide behind the shelves to avoid his attacks and to eat your food without annoying distractions.

Now that you have the rundown on how to protect yourself, here's the best way to attack: Equip yourself with the katana and climb on top of one of the food shelves, which should lure Steve and his cart over to you. Once he gets close, Steve will pull out his shotgun, because he can't ram you with his cart when you are elevated. Before he has a chance to shoot, jump down on the opposite side of where Steve is standing, then quickly run around the edge of the shelf and attack him; if this is done correctly, Steve will be vulnerable, since he will be looking for you up on the shelves or getting ready to position his shopping cart full of sharp objects to ram you.

When your health runs low, drink milk and eat fruit instead of bread -- they restore more health. Be sure to stay out of harm's way by hiding behind the shelves and you should be fine. Kill Steve as quickly as possible because the clock is still winding down. Remember, you still need to get Brad his medicine, so enter the pharmacy through the double doors. Once you are facing the pharmacy's counter, walk to the right and you will come across the doors. The medicine will be on the floor, so get it and backtrack to headquarters while keeping an eye on your time.

Case 4 Part 2: Girl Hunting

Head back to the North Plaza and proceed to the front of Seon's grocery store. Before you reach the grocery store, save your progress at the save slot by entering the bathroom (on your right). Be sure to check the clock to avoid any sort of time constraints, making sure that you have ample time to complete the case. When you get closer to Seon's grocery store, there will be a cut-scene with the young woman you are tailing: She will eye you with a smirk and then jump onto her Harley. Once the cut-scene is over, avoid getting in her motorcycle's path. By utilizing the scaffolding that sits around the fountain, you can get to a higher elevation where she won't be able to reach you on her motorcycle.

You will find a nail gun on the top of the scaffolding, on a bridge between the fountain and the far wall. If you happen to be unarmed with any firepower, the nail gun will provide you with the necessary muscle to tackle the girl and bring her down. Otherwise a pistol or an Uzi will work well, too.

Study her patterns to determine where she rides the motorcycle. Be aware that she will use the ramps that lead up to the scaffolding, so it's not a good idea to stand still on the lower portions of the scaffolding; the higher the elevation the better. Alternatively, you can step into the unfinished fountain on ground level to shoot her. She will often circle the fountain, so it is a good idea to stay in first-person mode, aiming your weapon at her at all times.

When she's not attempting to run you over with her bike, she'll pull out her handgun to blast you with bullets. Immediately counterattack when she fires. Keep your distance throughout the fight and don't step out into the open -- you'll risk being hit by the bike. Also, be sure to preserve your ammo for opportune hits, because if you run out of ammo, it won't be easy to take her down with only your fists.

Case 5 Part 2: Transporting Isabella

Apparently, Carlito and Isabella can't seem to play together nicely. Within this part of the fifth case you must transport a brokenhearted Isabella to headquarters on your back. Along the way you you'll meet up with Kindel, but we found it too difficult to keep him alive. With Isabella on your back, you'll want to have a full health gauge before you trek across the zombie-infested mall. It won't hurt to have some extra health items on hand, just in case you run into serious problems with the zombies (or get lost).

Zombies are the biggest challenge in this case. By transporting Isabella on your back, you are unable to attack or jump, but you can still open doors to exit the mall. If you need to put Isabella down to consume some food or to open a door, try to do it in a way that won't leave either of you vulnerable to an attack; in other words, set her down in a quiet corner or in a store free of zombies.

Case 7 Part 2: Bomb Collector

Check your transceiver as soon as it rings in this mission, since it will be Otis redirecting you where to go. Once you step out of Leisure Park to exit Paradise Plaza, Otis will ask you to proceed to the parking lot just north of Wonderland Plaza. Cross the park and head toward the spot on the map that indicates the parking lot, which is marked by a car.

Once you arrive at the outdoor parking lot, hop onto the motorcycle (not the car, it won't fit through the barrier this time around) and proceed down the ramp into the lower portion of Willamette Mall, marked B1 on the map (cycle through the various floors of the mall with either RB or LB). Use your map to remember your point of entry, because as you traverse the tunnels on your motorcycle, it will take damage from all those zombies in your way. The best strategy is to reemerge from the tunnels into the outdoor parking lot every so often to get a fresh pair of wheels, thus preventing you from having to navigate the zombie-infested hellhole of B1 while on foot if your motorcycle breaks.

Carlito has placed five separate car bombs throughout the underground maze. It is up to you to locate and disarm them. Make sure to use your map to plan your route; following the guide arrow alone is not recommended, as it is confusing. Once you have planned your route (you can tap the X button on the map screen to show you the closest question mark, which will zoom in on the nearest bomb), proceed with caution.

Although it sounds like a lot of fun, avoid hitting all those zombies in order to preserve your motorcycle. The bomb is in the back of a closed truck. Park your motorcycle on the opposite side of the truck to avoid getting hit by Carlito in his truck, then hop off your motorcycle and quickly open the back doors of the truck housing the bomb and disarm it.

After disarming the first two bombs it's a good idea to proceed back up to the parking lot to get a new motorcycle. Don't worry too much about time constraints, because you should have more than enough time to complete this case, so returning to the surface to get a new motorcycle shouldn't be an issue.

After getting another motorcycle, proceed back into the underground tunnel and check your map for the nearest bomb. Repeat the same strategy as before, which, needless to say, is to arrive at the truck that contains the bomb. Park your bike on the opposite side of the truck. As you get closer to the final bomb, Carlito will try to run you over with his truck, but as long as you keep moving and know where you are going, avoiding Carlito won't be too difficult.

The third bomb is located near the entrance of the parking lot. After disarming this bomb, return to the parking lot for the last time to get a new motorcycle for the final two bombs. There is also a truck that you can drive in the northwest corner of the underground labyrinth, which is handy if you happen to be up there and feel that your motorcycle is ready to break. The final two bombs shouldn't be a problem after you take a motorcycle from the parking lot a second time.

Case 8 Parts 2, 3, 4: Hideout and the Butcher

    Hideout
Carlito may have a few more tricks up his sleeve after the bombs, so Jessie advises you to investigate his hideout and try to find his computer. His hideout is in the North Plaza, conveniently located next to the Huntin' Shack. Isabella will go to the hideout with you, since she knows where it is. When escorting Isabella to the hideout, have some weapons on hand to help clear a pathway for her; either the katana or barbarian sword works best because they attack quickly and powerfully. Isabella does carry a handgun and will occasionally get hung up trying to shoot zombies. When this happens, kill the zombies that she is attacking to free her path.

    Part 3
The third part of case 8 requires you to backtrack to the hideout. Isabella stays behind to hack computer password. There's nothing too difficult about this segment, though you should go to the Huntin' Shack and get a few shotguns. Not only will this help expedite the process of getting back to the security room, but it'll also give you some serious firepower for an upcoming boss battle. Grab at least two shotguns and a sniper rifle. If you have enough inventory slots, take one more shotgun, but be sure to save some room for health smoothies.

After reaching headquarters, Jessie informs you that Carlito has been taken prisoner by a psychotic butcher. Be aware that, up until this part of case 8, the clock has continually been counting down, which means you will have to complete all of parts 2, 3, and 4 of case 8 in one chunk of time. After finishing parts 2 and 3, it is a good idea to save your progress back at headquarters, since you'll soon be embroiled in a boss battle, and if you die during it you will have to load your file and begin case 8 all over again.

    The Butcher

The final part of case 8 occurs in the meat department of Seon's grocery store, located on level B1. Before you reach your final destination, make sure you have at least two shotguns in your inventory. From Paradise Plaza, run across Leisure Park and head over to the parking lot. Get behind the wheel of the sports car and drive down the ramp to enter the underground B1 area. Drive north toward Seon's grocery, and at the far end you will notice a double door on your right, which is the entrance to the meat department.

When the fight begins, you can fire off a few quick rounds with the shotgun before the butcher attacks you. Then, immediately scurry like a ferret to avoid the butcher's reach. Fight this battle from a distance; otherwise you might end up on a meat hook, which would severely hamper your ability to take photographs. You can use the tables located throughout the stage to put some space between the butcher and yourself. There are also a few milk cartons for health located on the big metallic table in the back. When you're consuming food, be sure that the butcher is not close to you. If so, take refuge behind the grinding machine.

After Case 8: Waiting for the Helicopter

There is a convenient save location in Carlito's hideout, an old rug, which is situated on the floor behind the computer near the back wall. You should save your progress after finishing the eighth case because you will need to rendezvous with Isabella in Carlito's hideout. Oh yeah, there's a new threat in the mall, too.

After you finish case 8, the game takes a dramatic change when the federal army storms into the mall. Although these guys may look like they are made of steel, it is possible to take them out. At this point in the game, you will have some great opportunities to level up, because each confirmed federal army kill is a 5,000 PP reward.

The roof is an especially effective place from which to kill the army. From headquarters, proceed through the air shaft and onto the roof. Then go through the door that leads to the elevated shelves, where you would normally enter the mall. You will see a group of federal army guys bunkered down below, attacking zombies with their rifles. Use the elevation of the shelves to your advantage and shoot them. They won't be able to aim up at you; instead they'll run around like idiots and bunch up in the corner, making it easier to take them out. You can also use the propane tanks, located on top of the shelves, to kill them faster. After you've killed the last soldier, jump down and collect their automatic rifles, the best weapons in the game.

If you manage to die (or deplete all your health) during this portion of the game, instead actually dying and having the option to load a saved game, you will receive a cut-scene showcasing your capture. You can break free from confinement using the left analog stick, but it is far more effective to turn off the game and reload your game because, even if you manage to escape, you will be practically naked and will have lost all your weapons.

The helicopter is still scheduled to arrive at the end of the third day, Sep 22, at 12:00 p.m. In order to be at the right place, be sure that you are standing on the actual helicopter landing pad, and not just on the rooftop somewhere. To get to the helicopter pad (in case you forget) simply run up the stairs that are right next to the save point at headquarters
