Oh, and a few tips:

1. Never dig beneath or above you.
2. Iron Pickaxe (or was it steel?) is slightly better than Gold.
3. ALWAYS HAVE A SHELTER AND A BED IF YOU WANT TO GET THROUGH NIGHT-TIMES EASIER.
4. Torches are always handy

Gold is the best resource available (fastest at getting the resources corresponding to the tool), but it has fewer uses than wood.
And there is no steel in MC.

Okay, but Iron pickaxes can mine Redstone and probably Diamond faster.

No. Gold is faster. Even faster than diamond.
