The text can be easily achieved with layer styles..entirely
The background can be achieved with a bucket tool (color & pattern) the fade with Select menu and Delete button.
In Photoshop, that is.

The background in Gimp is just as easy, you just need to make the custom pattern and use a reversed black to transparency radial gradient, and then colorize the pattern layer. Atleast that's what I would do, I haven't watched the tutorial.
Also, I think the text would probably look cool if the gloss faded out.
