I know the variables but they don't change, why?

I'm trying to hack a particular swf, i can see the variables names but when i set them they don't change. Maybe i've forgot something but i don't know.
Example;

public var score;

According to the situation it could be _root.score or _this.score(this refers to the class i think). Or also only "score".
But i've tried a lot of combination and none of them works. Any idea?
I've also some problems on "this", does it refer to the class name or to the object?
