There was an episode in the original anime where Jessie and James were stranded at sea on a wooden raft. Starving, they both dreamed of magikarp sushi. It was a delicacy. That more than confirmed that pokemon were also eaten as food. The original anime was a lot more controversial than the following ones.

Yes, Carl987 thanks for correcting me. xxSharpfirexx, isn't it absurd how they train their pokemon and yet eat pokemon? It's their friendly companion basically a pet which they could adventures with. If Ash Ketchum was ever hungry he could just boil Pikachu and his other pokemon. Atleast they have a food supply which can follow them where ever they go.
