Use the button with the flag on it. The button is in the lower left. You have to have enough colonization experience. (Go to a university and work up your skills there)

WTF? this game is good. but confusing. How many ships do i need to take over a planet that has no one on it! I brought like 20 ships with me and it not take it lol.

you know what's REALLY cool? You can make up your own ships. YA RLY! Just don't make the speed too high. 99 antimatter usage is best because then it's none used.
